چکیده

This paper examines, analyzes, and synthesizes literature on VOT production and perception in the context of Motor Theory of speech perception. Specifically, positive and negative evidences from speech production and perception, language acquisition, and evidence of dissociation from speech disorders of VOT are reviewed in the light of the Necessity Condition versus a weaker version of motor theory suggested by Hickok and Poeppel (2004), which postulates that the mapping of sensory representations of speech onto motor representations may not be an automatic consequence of speech perception, and indeed are not necessary for auditory comprehension (Hickok & Poeppel 2000), but can be activated and utilized strategically to assist in task performance. I. General Theory of Speech Production and Perception a. Motor theory of speech perception b. Evidence from normal adults c. Developmental evidence II. Production and Perception of Voice-onset Time (VOT) in Normal Individuals a. Acquisition of VOT b. Production and perception of VOT: categorical perception III. Production and Perception of Voice-onset Time (VOT) in Individuals with Speech Disorders a. Overview of neural correlates of speech production and perception and the types of aphasia b. Nature of VOT production errors in Broca's aphasia and Wernicke's aphasia c. Perception of VOT in aphasic patients d. Evidence for motor theory of VOT perception e. Evidence for dissociation between VOT production and perception f. Other Evidence for dissociation of production and perception

Voice Onset Time and the Perception of Japanese Voicing Contrasts

Much crosslinguistic research exists on the production and perception of voice onset time (VOT). However, most research on the perception of VOT uses synthetic stimuli instead of natural speech stimuli. Effects of synthetic speech on the perception of VOT are not known, but more research needs to be done to see if there are differences between perception using synthetic speech and perception us...

The Effects of Age of Onset on VOT in L2 Acquisition and L1 Attrition A Study of the Speech Production and Perception of Advanced Spanish-Swedish Bilinguals

This thesis explores the role of age in second language (L2) acquisition and first language (L1) attrition. The focus is on Voice Onset Time (VOT) in the production and categorical perception of word-initial L1 and L2 stops in highly advanced L1 Spanish learners of L2 Swedish. Using as the point of departure a maturational constraints perspective and the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH), Study ...

Demodulation, mirror neurons and audiovisual perception nullify the motor theory

According to the Motor Theory of Speech Perception (MTSP), listeners perceive speech by way of the articulatory gestures they would perform themselves in producing a similar signal. The theory postulates a module that allows extracting gestural information from the signal. The gestures constitute the event perceived. According to the Modulation Theory (MDT), speech is modulated voice. Listeners...

Effects of linguistic experience on perception and learnability of non-speech categories

The present study addresses whether linguistic experience affects the learnability of non-speech categories and in turn whether learning non-speech categories affects speech perception. Speakers of English and Spanish, languages that have different mappings between voice-onset-time (VOT) and their voicing categories, were trained to categorize a series of analogous non-speech (tone-onset-time) ...
